SECONDARY RESEARCH

Content research is when you analyse content you have found online or created yourself. You can see what will be beneficial too you to enable you to grow and improve.

Some examples of content research are:

  • Primary research

  • Secondary research

  • Questionnaires

  • Surveys

  • Target audience

  • Framing

With the examples above about content research I need to use some of the to get the right research I need for my project. For my product I need to look into primary research which is research done by myself. For this type of research, I have created a survey asking people about portrait photography. Below is the link to my survey and the results to my survey. This survey has helped me with my research because it has told me what people are interested and how interested they are. It also gives me an idea of the gender of people that will like this type of photography. Even though I have used the YouGov website as well this give me more of an idea who likes it.

I also need to investigate secondary research which I will find on the internet, books, magazines, and statistics.

When I decided on my final idea for my final major project, I went to Pinterest looking for inspiration and different ideas I could do with children. I saved a lot of them, but I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to do they, but I have chosen 3 definite ones I want to try and recreate but adapt in my own way. Some of the ones I have chosen might not go how I want them to go so I have other ideas as well. Some of the posts I have saved I don’t like they at all, but I have taken inspiration from them to change to how I want it look.

EDITING TECHNIQUES

After looking into/ research editing software's people use to edit their portrait photos I came across a website which went into detail about what you need to look at for each aspect of the photo and how you need to change it if you need to. It also gave you a visual of the before and after. With them giving you this to look at you can see what has been changed.

With me combining Portrait and Black and White photography I needed to look it both and the editing software. Below are 2 links of tutorials of how to change an image to black and white. This was the best research I could find on the editing software both tutorials go through the steps to achieve a black and white image.

Doing research into the editing techniques will help me with my FMP because it gives me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in photoshop and gives me the opportunity edit my photos to the best I can. Without this research I wouldn’t know how to edit my photos into black and white from colour.

The research above about editing shows me how to edit my photos effectively and properly. It has shown me you don’t just stick a black and white filter on your photos because it doesn't always come our right you have change some setting within the photos. This can impact my project in a positive way because its show me how to do and how I can improve my editing skills. For the first few times I do this I will have to look at the videos but as I do it more and more it will become natural, and I will be able to do it easy enough.

From both of the links I have included as part of my research I aim to use some of the editing skills in the videos if that it what I am wanting to achieve from the photo. Even though I might not want to do what is shows in the videos and skills they are showing I will be able to use them for other ideas because I am still learning something and gaining something from the videos. I am still learning something from the videos because they have other skills in them I can use.

EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES

For my project portrait photography, I will need.

  • DSLR Camera

  • Lenses

  • Lighting

  • Tripod

  • Backdrop (if wanting blank background)

https://www.digitalphotomentor.com/equipment-needed-for-portrait-lighting/ The research I have done within the equipment I need will improve the quality of my photos because I wouldn’t have thought about using a tripod even though a tripod is a necessary in general but, for this type of photography, I would have just held the camera, but you are advised to use a tripod this will improve my images and make the sharper because the camera is completely still, and I can adjust the angle of the camera and will stay still. During the production I will try different angles with the camera and see which way would be best to capture the image correctly. The link above which I have uses for my research into the resources I need gives you other options for different equipment you need when doing a shoot. By having the knowledge and looking into this site it will help me get the right equipment for what I want to achieve in this project. The research I have done for my equipment and resources will help me achieve my images correctly because of the different angles and lighting you need, and which is best.

BUDGETING AND EQUIPTMENT

For my project I need some extra equipment. These products are.

  • Tripod

  • Backdrop

  • Confetti

  • Mirror These are the extra things I need for my project for it to be successful and to be how I planned out. Overall, for my extra bits are £30. My tripod was £15, backdrop £10, confetti £2 and mirror £2. I got the tripod and backdrop from Amazon and mirror and confetti from supermarket. These recourses are the things I need make my photos better and other products I need while I am doing my project. Tripods is a good piece of extra equipment on some of the websites linked into different research. The others weren't recommended but is something I need because of the ideas I have thought of.

Looking back over this research of Budgeting, Equipment and Resources I took everything into consideration to make sure I was able to get the best quality images. By looking into the equipment people recommend I wouldn't of used this if I didn't do research into them.

LOCATION

Location of your shoot can affect your images and how you want them to look. Before you plan how you are going to achieve your products you need to think of the location for your shoot to take place. With the photos I have taken inspiration from I can do mine in my house with a plain backdrop.

There are a few photos that are my backup photos that I will need to go out and about for it. If that is the case and I need to choose ore images I have planned where we will go whether depending. When choosing the location, you need the thing of the 5 pints to find the right location for you.

Doing research into the location you can achieve your photos it has made me think of where I want to do it and where it will look best. I am going to do it in my house with backdrops and other things. There are a few ideas I want to do outside but might not work so I have other plans if they don’t.

SKILLS

Within photography you need to use both soft and hard skills. Soft skills are skills everyone uses such as communication, teamwork, time management and having a good relationship with other.

Hard skills are skills you need to show for your job such as the techniques you have learnt within photography, how you do things and how you can achieve them.

You also need many other skills within photography such as: having a good camera position, the lighting be correct, composition styles, angles of your camera, etc.

Researching into the skills I need has helped me because its giving me more knowledge to give my all throughout my project and getting the overall outcome I want to achieve.

PLANNING/ PRODUCTION

To plan this shoot, I gave the model the chance to give me her ideas, so I know what she wants to do and how she wants to do it this helped me because it gave me an idea what she was interested in and what she wanted to do. By doing it this way she can in a way take over and do her ideas.

To make sure I produce my final major project to the best of my ability I am going to talk numerous photos for my inspirations and ideas until I’ve got enough and the right one, I want to achieve. To help me achieve the best images I have bought a tripod to keep the camera stable and make the images less blurry.

Once I’ve done that with throughout all my idea, I will move onto editing in photoshop to make some of my images effective and editing them how I want the final product to look.

The link below gives you step by step of how to plan a shoot and what you need to think about when planning.

The research I have done into planning and production will help me because I had no ideas what you needed for s photoshoot even if you aren't working in a studio.

HISTORY

the link above is all about Black and White photography including the history behind it.

it gives the history behind the first ever Black and white photography which was 35 years before 1861 which is the year of 1826.

In 1861 the first colour image was captured; this was when people started using colour images and taking images in colour. From this research I can see Black and White photography was very popular and a lot of people used it. Black and White images can symbolise different meanings such as age or just to be effective.

with looking into this research, it has made me think about where to use black and white.

The website above also goes into detail about other things you need within photography such as camera settings/ equipment.

RELEVANT THEORIES

Looking into the different theories we have looked at my project is looking at a dominant reading. i have chosen this one because I am getting the point across and being direct to the reader. By doing this i am making people aware of my opinions and to see if they agree with what I am doing and the reason for it. The reason I am using this reading is because I am being direct with the audience. My whole idea is that children can be on a cover of a magazine and it not being adults all the time. By having children on front covers it will show children who want to model they can do, and they can achieve their dreams.
